Focus on Giving

During this time period it can be very easy to become insular and switch into survival mode. But, like in any down market, there’s always opportunity. This opportunity will set you up for future growth. That’s focusing on giving.

Giving What?

Anything you feel can help someone save time, money, resources, or all of the above. Why? Mainly because we’re human and the only way we’re going to succeed is together. After all, someone gave you something to help you in your journey. It only makes sense to pay it forward. However, there’s more to it.

Giving More Getting More

I’m amazed at the generous spirit of one of my clients. The biggest thing he gives is his expertise. In several scenarios he’s saved his clients literally thousands of dollars on remodels to their home through his advice. He just gives it away. What has he gotten in return? A steady stream of work that hasn’t stopped even in this down market. Why, you wonder?

Law of Reciprocity

It’s quite simple and it does work. When you help someone in a jam, save them time or money, they feel indebted to you. Now they’ll support you because deep down people want to see people win. When you incorporate giving into your business model people will appreciate it because they’re looking for solutions.

I’ve bought so many things from businesses that have given me tips, tools and insights that have helped me grow tremendously. I want to see them succeed and, a bit selfishly, get more tips to help me grow. I can’t get more if they go out of business, so I must support them. The best part of it all is their humility and gratitude always makes me happy buying. So, what can you give people during this time?

Tips

Where would we be without YouTube? There are channels full of instructions and more, that help us tremendously. You can do that same. Quick instructional videos, blog posts, or tip sheets that are given just for the sake of giving your knowledge to help someone. Transparency

Being transparent in the process of doing business with you instills trust. I was listening to The Elevating Funeral Service Podcast where they highlighted a funeral home that gave instructions on what to do if you’re unhappy with the service you’ve been provided. They even included links to the Federal Trade Commission on submitting complaints for investigation.

That says to me his service is so white glove that you wouldn’t even need to use that link. Subliminally, it also says that if you had a bad service somewhere else here’s your recourse and we’re ready to assist when you switch funeral homes. That kind of transparency wins business.

Opportunity

This is two parts. The first goes with our economic times. Many businesses are seeking EDIL and PPP loans from the government to survive. Equally, we’ve read stories of businesses that clearly don’t need such assistance are getting millions leaving less for the ones that really need it. Therefore, if you don’t need the bailout don’t take it or take exactly what you need.

Secondly, you can give opportunity to others. If you’re not the right fit for a job tell the client and refer someone reputable to it. Do what’s in their best interest even if it means no money in your pocket. Both the client and the referee will feel indebted.

Making giving part of your model is not only a refreshment for these times, but it’s the way things are moving. Be ahead of the game rather than behind the 8-ball and your brand will grow. Until next time I wish you much success transforming your business into an amazing brand.
